My brother Shaggy and I'll be in your city next weekend (Saturday 26th-27th) exhibiting at the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival. It's free to attend and if you'd like to come say hello we'll be hanging out with our booth buddy Tony Cliff (creator of the Eisner Award nominated webcomic "Delilah Dirk"!) at table 38. TCAF and Joe Shuster Award nominations!

(Pushing comics on our lovely cartoonist friend Tory Woollcott.)

My brother Shaggy and I had an absolutely fantastic time at TCAF (Toronto Comic Arts Festival) last weekend- definitely one of the most fun, successful and inspiring conventions we've exhibited at yet! And I'd like to give HUGE THANKS to our little sister Hesbell and friend Adriana Blake for being amazing booth buddies.

We are also super excited to announce that Silly Kingdom is up for TWO nominations in the 2012 Joe Shuster Awards!!! We've been nominated for the Gene Day award for self publishing and the Dragon Award for Kids Comics (and are the only self published title in that category). We're absolutely honored to be up for consideration amongst so many amazing titles, thank you!!

We were also lucky enough to get a couple sweet fanarts while at TCAF, one depicting sibling shenanigans from our cartoonist pal Brian Evinou:
And another from the delightful Jamie Campbell:

Mega thanks to everyone who came by TCAF and the after parties to say hello, hang out and pick up copies of our book. TCAF wouldn't have been nearly as much fun without you guys and Shaggy and I are ever grateful for your awesome support (and all around awesomeness).

Cheers!

TCAF is coming!

And it's going to be fan-freakin'-tastic! Maps are still being drawn up for where everyone's exhibiting but panels and programming has been announced and I'll be taking part in two live-drawing panels:

SATURDAY at "The Pilot Tavern" (22 Cumberland St)
12:45 – 1:30 – Ed Mirvish Rollerball Derby Draw-Off
For generations the question has gone unanswered: who is better at drawing Toronto discounting legend Ed Mirvish — Australians or Canadians? Three uppity Aussies take on three staunch Canadians in a game-show ink battle for the ages. While they draw, host John Retallick will do his best to distract the contestants, quiz the audience and toss free books every which way. With Sarah Howell, David Blumenstein, Matt Taylor, Katie Shanahan, John Martz, and Brian Fukushima. Moderator: John Retallick

SUNDAY in The Toronto Reference Library (TCAF central)
1:45pm-2:30pm: Kids Comics Quickfire, The Sequel
Part drawing jam, part fast-paced game show! Volunteers from the audience are paired off with (or against) professional cartoonists in a series of fun-filled drawing challenges!  Featuring Jennifer and Matt Holm (Babymouse, Squish), and Andy Runton (Owly). Hosted by Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy).

Having people watch me draw has always made me super uncomfortable so of course I said yes to taking on live-drawing events. Come watch me draw (and squirm) and get over my fear of people in these fun filled creative panels!!

And just-because, here's a screen cap I took of an earlier version of the exhibitors list, I got a kick out of Alengrimrickshaw's glare making Seth nervous.

Cheers!

Life Drawings

Ink and black colerase on animation paper again!

(2 min ^)

(20-30 min each pose ^)
For the last class of each session our teacher Brian chooses a painting for us to take inspiration from where the model will change costume and be different character for various sustained poses. Here he's acting out Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicoles Tulp" which Rembrandt apparently painted when he was twenty six years old. *throws paper in the air in defeat* I GIVE.

C2E2 mini recap with links!

(Photo taken by the awesome Michael May of CBR Robot 6 for the blog's C2E2 photodiary )
I’ve only just returned from Chicago’s C2E2 comic con and am already diving into another heavy storyboard deadline, so while I don’t have much time to do a proper blog-highlight I’ll quickly say that the con was AWESOME!!! I met a whole bunch of amazing people; old friends, new friends, readers and fabulous creators and am completely inspired to make more comics and art and amazing things!

Here are a few links of C2E2 related events that’ll give you a better idea of goings-on than my keyboard rambling ever could. A couple interviews focusing on a Womanthology panel I was part of and a really fun podcast my brother recorded the Saturday night of the convention with our table buddies.

Coverage of the “Ladies of Womanthology” panel by the Progressively Aggressive Podcast.

Talking to the Micromaphone: 035 Podcasthology at C2E2. With Shaggy Shan, Katie Shanahan and table buddies Jean Kang and Alex Clinkingbeard. Topics include C2E2, Womanthology, and how to avoid being creepy in artist alley. (about 1 hour)

Progressively Aggressive Podcast sits down with Jean Kang and Katie Shanahan. Where Jean talks really smart and I talk really fast.

That’s all for now, cheers gang!

(BONUS: Shaggy fulfilling his con quest of acquiring dapper swag... and peach flavoured Hi-Chews).

Hope to see you there :)

ALSO! I’ll be part of the “Ladies of Womathology” panel Saturday morning 11am in room N427bc (woop woop!!)

Music lessons in the garden

I've been so busy with animation work and drawing other people's characters lately, feels good to draw these folks again! Inspired by my own attempts to pick up the guitar. Also, I like to think the Princess is a lefty, like Shaggy's and my little sister Hes.

The Princess and Markus are characters from "Silly Kingdom," Shaggy's and my first self published comic available as either a digital pdf or printed book in our shop and at the comic conventions we are exhibiting at this year (C2E2, VanCAF, Con Bravo!)

Brutal Legend sketches

IndieGogo commission sketches for the excellent Adam Hines of Guys With Pencils.

Ash on a unicorn

Working away on more of the Silly Kingdom IndieGogo commissions, I will get these done and done awesome, by gum! This particular one was a treat to sketch.

Tatterhood

Hey folks!

"Cautionary Fables and Fairy Tales"(a comic anthology my brother Shaggy and I have a story in) is fresh from the printers and available to order at the anthology's bigcartel shop. We had a lot of fun with this one, "Tatterhood" is a truly bizarre story to begin with, and coupled with my brother's writing and my cartooning I think we really did it some justice.

Here's  4 page sample of our 16 page comic, hope you enjoy it!

What happens next?  Who made the clatter?? (I'll give you a hint, it aint no jolly fat man in red) You can read the continuation of this 16 page adventure story in the "Cautionary Fables and Fairy Tales" comic anthology!

200 pages of black and white fairy-tale comic goodness available as either a printed book or a digital PDF for instant downloading. Check out http://cfft.bigcartel.com/ to order
(or http://cfftuk.bigcartel.com/ for our friends across the pond!)

Thanks gang, hope these last few days of March are being good to you!

Life Drawings

(1-2 min ^)
Changing things up at life-drawing class: instead of conte on newsprint I went with a pentel pocket brush on animation paper. Less messy and helps me find a use for the stacks of animation paper I've kept with me since college.
(15 min ^) black colerase pencil for tones

Girls Read Comics Too: reviews Silly Kingdom

A very nice write up about "Silly Kingdom" on "Girls Read Comics Too"!

Tatterhood COMPLETE

My 16 page contribution to the upcoming comic anthology “Cautionary Fables and Fairy Tales” which will be available sometime in May (most likely off of anthology creator Kel McDonald’s website and at some awesome comic cons). My brother Shaggy (writer) and I (drawer) took on one of my favourite bizarre stories “Tatterhood” and as usually had a lot of fun with it.

If you’re one of the kickstarter backers and got a copy of the PDF I’d love to hear what you think!

Quick comic news!

(For the "Cautionary Fables and Fairy Tales" comic anthology, COMING SOON!)

Also! Here's a video preview of the lovely (and massive) “Womanthology” comic anthology from project creator Renae De Liz! (you can see a quick preview of my comic at 2:50 mark (written by Joamette Gil with colours by Mary Bellamy). Can't wait to get my creator copy, just hope it doesn't crack my coffee table in half with its mightiness.

Silly Kingdom at Little Island!

Little Island Comics is an absolutely amazing shop here in Toronto curating excellent comics, illustrative books and creative events for kids (and the kid-at-heart!) I'm super honored that they'll be carrying a limited number of our Silly Kingdom books in store! So if you're in Toronto and want to pick up a copy, head on over to Little Island Comics and tell them so!

And here's a post from back in September when my brother Shaggy and I went in to investigate the newly opened shop and were completely delighted. Comics are the best!

Madly working through some storyboards so I'll have to share my hourlies once I get time to scan them in this weekend. In the meantime here's a peek at a comic I'm working on with my bro Shaggy for the "Cautionary Fables and Fairytales" comic anthology.

In other news HOLY MOLY! Thanks so much everyone who jumped aboard yesterday's Silly Kingdom comic sale! We'll be packaging up all those orders and hauling them to the post office first thing next week :)

Hourly Comic Day SALE!

If you haven't heard of "Hourly Comic Day" its a challenge taken on by a whole bunch of cartoonists around the world to document every waking hour with a comic panel or two (or more).

I'll also be participating in hourly comic day (while juggling comic/storyboard deadlines) and you can check out my attempts from last year here!

Cheers gang! Thanks for being awesome!
